Although FGM is practised in some communities in the belief that it is a religious requirement, research shows that FGM pre-dates Islam and Christianity. Some researchers have traced the practice to Egypt in the fifth-century BC and argue that the geographical distribution of FGM suggests that it originated on the west coast of the Red Sea.

Egypt has in the past instituted laws that criminalized FGM performed by traditional practitioners, from taking place in public hospitals, and outlawing it altogether except with doctor approval.12 These laws had the unintended consequences of medicalizing FGM, which is why medicalized FGM is so high in Egypt compared to other countries.

African Union Assembly/AU/Dec. 383(XVII) produced a decision stating that “female genital mutilation (FGM) is a gross violation of the fundamental human rights of women and girls, with serious repercussions on the lives of millions of people worldwide, especially women and girls in Africa.”

Despite the fact that it is illegal, dangerous and violating, the reality is that female genital mutilation (FGM) is a reality in most communities in Kenya. A survey done in 2015 revealed that about 75 out of 100 girls go through FGM either willingly or unwillingly in Meru County despite the fact that the practice is outlawed.

Some 92% of married Egyptian women aged between 15-49 have had their genitals cut. FGM is more common in Egypt than anywhere else in the world. These astonishing statistics are all the more surprising when you consider that Egypt banned the practise in 2008. So why is FGM so prevalent in Egypt?
